ABOUT US

The Junction is a Youth Health Service delivering health care to young people aged 12 -25 yrs and their dependents,  with a focus on at risk youth.

Opened in May 1998 the Junction was originally located in the Old QEII Building in Acton. The Junction was initially funded as a pilot project which was completed after an evaluation in 1999. Anglicare Canberra and Goulbourn Youth and Family Services were awarded the – 2000/2001 service contract following a tender process conducted by the Department of Health and Community Care.

The Junction is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and the ACT Governments under the Innovative Health Services for Homeless Youth Agreement (IHSHY).

As the Junction expanded, plans were put in place for the development of new premises. The end result was the Club 12/25 Youth Services in Civic. The new building houses many youth services with the main three being Youth in the City (youth centre), YEP (Young Education Program) and the Junction. The new premises was officially opened in August 2005.

The Junction provides a flexible, multidisciplinary approach to primary health care and support services for young people in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

This service draws together key services and organisations in a coordinated approach to enhance support and provide an integrated and individually tailored service response to the identified needs of young people. These services include Child at Risk Health Unit (ACT Community Health), the Step Ahead Program (The Canberra Hospital Ante natal), and Cancer Council ACT Smoking Cessation.

The services provided by the Junction include those of a general practitioner, paediatric registrar, youth health nurses, youth workers, counsellors, and midwife. There is also Outreach teams compromising of a youth nurse consultant  and youth worker for the Belconnen/Gunghalin region and Tuggeranong region. Connect young people to GP's in their community, provide outreach services to schools and other youth services.

The Junction has a holistic approach to healthcare and aims to support young people in all aspects of their health and wellbeing. By liaising with other health and community services, providing advocacy, support and referral for young people the Junction has established a healthy reputation as a key service provider in youth health in the ACT and surrounding regions. In addition, the Junction assists with brokerage for young people to access medical needs such as prescriptions and other pharmaceuticals as well as any other identified health needs. The Junction also aims to provide health promotion/prevention services and programs tailored to the specific needs of the service group.

OPENING HOURS

The Junction Youth Health Service is open from 1.00pm - 5.00pm Monday to Friday. The phones will be answered from 9.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
