ABOUT US

The Junction is a Youth Health Service targeting young people, particularly homeless or otherwise at risk young people, operating out of the new Club 12/25 Youth Service in Civic.

Opened in May 1998 the Junction was originally located in the Old QEII Building in Acton. The Junction was initially funded as a pilot project which was completed after an evaluation in 1999. Anglicare Canberra and Goulbourn Youth and Family Services were awarded the – 2000/2001 service contract following a tender process conducted by the Department of Health and Community Care.

The Junction is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and the ACT Governments under the Innovative Health Services for Homeless Youth Agreement (IHSHY).

As the Junction expanded, plans were put in place for the development of new premises. The end result was the Club 12/25 Youth Services in Civic. The new building houses many youth services with the main four being Youth in the City (youth centre) CYCLOPS (connecting young carers to life opportunities and personalised support), YEP (Young Education Program) and the Junction. The new premises was officially opened in August 2005.

The Junction provides a flexible, multidisciplinary approach to the provision of integrated health and support services for young people in the ACT.

This service draws together key services and organisations in a coordinated approach to enhance support and provide an integrated and individually tailored service response to the identified needs of young people. These services include ACT Division of General Practice, ACT Community Care, The Canberra Sexual Health Centre, Child at Risk Unit (Community Health), Open Family and YWCA.

The services provided by the Junction include those of a general practitioner, a youth health nurse, a youth worker, a youth specific counsellor, and a specialist sexual health nurse practitioner. The Junction has a holistic approach to healthcare and aims to support young people in all aspects of their health and wellbeing. By liaising with other health and community services, providing advocacy, support and referral for young people the Junction has established a healthy reputation as a key service provider in youth health in the ACT and surrounding regions. In addition, the Junction provides brokerage for young people to access medical needs such as prescriptions and other pharmaceuticals as well as any other identified health needs. The Junction also aims to provide health promotion/prevention services and programs tailored to the specific needs of the service group.
